KU Resources is dedicated to providing outstanding support in environmental management and site development engineering to our residential, commercial, and industrial clients. Our personnel strive to fully understand our clients’ needs and develop a plan to achieve their goals on time and on budget. This proactive approach to interacting with our clients allows us to develop a customized solution to their environmental challenges, allowing them to focus on accomplishing other valuable objectives.

We specialize in the following core markets:

Brownfield Site Assessment, Remediation, and Redevelopment
For a number of years, we have been proactively involved in the characterization, remediation, and redevelopment of environmentally impaired properties, including active and former industrial properties. In addition to technical activities, KU Resources has effectively worked with our clients to identify and prioritize potential redevelopment sites, and have assisted our clients in acquiring funding to support brownfield activities.

Wood Treating
Throughout the United States, our firm’s members have worked at more than 100 different wood treating and wood treating chemical production facilities. This work has included investigations, risk assessments, remedial planning, remedy implementation, and operations/maintenance and monitoring under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Corrective Action; the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act; and various State voluntary programs.

Pennsylvania Land Recycling Program (Act 2)
As an appointed member of the Pennsylvania Cleanup Standards Scientific Advisory Board, one of our Principals, Mark Urbassik, worked with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to develop both the implementing regulations and the supporting guidance surrounding Act 2. With heavy involvement in the Act 2 Program, we have systematically and efficiently executed numerous environmental site assessments (ESAs) and remediation activities under these regulations. In addition, we have supported many public sector clients in developing successful brownfield grant applications, and are aware of potential sources of money for Pennsylvania redevelopment projects.

Real Estate Transaction Phase I and Phase II ESAs
We have supported numerous clients through industrial and commercial real estate transactions. Our staff is fully knowledgeable of the required ASTM procedures, including the “All Appropriate Inquiries” Rule, which allows us to provide timely solutions to our clients. We offer various services to support property transactions including Phase I and Phase II ESAs, asbestos and lead surveys, compliance evaluations, and geotechnical and structural evaluations.

Underground Storage Tanks (UST) – Corrective Action
Our dedicated staff of environmental professionals regularly performs UST assessments and remediation at gasoline stations, convenience stores, railroad yards, auto repair shops, and other properties that pose a potential of having USTs below ground. Our experience includes tank removal management, as well as, investigation and risk assessment activities to determine the significance of any impacts from releases. If the assessment determines a release of petroleum products or other hazardous substances occurred, we will develop a cost-effective remedial action plan.

State Voluntary Cleanup Programs
We have the expertise and knowledge in a number of states’ voluntary cleanup programs. Our staff includes personnel certified under West Virginia’s and Ohio’s voluntary programs. We understand the risk-based approaches embodied in most of these programs, and have the ability to work with clients to meet the requirements of the various State programs.

Corporate Environmental Compliance and Liability Management
As seasoned corporate environmental managers, we collaborate with business managers and counsel to develop and implement various environmental management initiatives. Issues that we have managed include corporate compliance auditing programs; protocols to maintain consistency with the National Contingency Plan; protocols to support the presentation of cost recovery claims, and the defense thereof; and protocols to maintain consistent approaches for multiple sites.

Remediation
Utilizing turn-key approaches, our experienced project managers provide safe and cost-effective remediation solutions to our clients, in accordance with all Federal and State regulations. From small-scale projects to large multi-million dollar projects, we utilize both construction-based and technology-based remediation techniques to aid in the transformation of contaminated sites into shopping districts, residential developments, and other possible reuses. Our clients work directly with our company, rather than several unaffiliated contractors. This approach allows us to provide customized solutions for our clients, while keeping close control over project deliverables, schedules, and budgets.

Railroads
Using the expertise of our personnel combined with a selected group of specialty subcontractors, we offer our railroad clients a full array of services to meet their remediation needs. Our personnel are experienced project managers capable of managing any type of environmental railroad project efficiently from start to finish. Through KU Resources, our clients have access to an organization currently providing environmental remediation, engineering, consulting, and waste transportation and disposal to a wide group of clients.
