KU Resources, Inc. was formed in January 1997 to provide environmental management consulting. The founding Principals, David R. Kerschner and Mark R. Urbassik, believed that lowering the overall cost structure and offering timely, customized solutions to clients would be a solid foundation for a successful company.
In October of 2003, KU Resources began offering civil and geotechnical engineering services such as site development engineering, water resources engineering, mining and quarry services, solid waste management, water quality monitoring, forensic engineering, and litigation support.
In January 2004, KU Resources entered the air quality compliance industry, offering services such as permitting, technology determination, software recordkeeping systems, compliance audits, regulatory agency negotiations, annual emissions, and problem resolution services.
With expansions in the workforce, services, clients, and projects, the firm moved its headquarters to its current location in June 2004.
In January 2007, the firm completed an expansion of its current location by adding 5,000 square feet to the existing building.
In August 2008, KU Resources opened its Washington, Pennsylvania office to focus on the management and coordination of plant dismantling, remediation, and divestiture for major chemicals and plastics manufacturers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. The remedial technologies often used include air sparging, free-phase product removal, landfarming, bioremediation/bio-stimulation, soil venting, and vapor extraction.
In October 2008, the firm acquired Hannigan Engineering Associates. This venture expanded the firm’s services to include geotechnical investigations for residential/commercial developments, foundation design, landslide remediation, and retaining wall design.
In April 2014, KU Resources acquired JMJ Construction Testing, Inc. This venture allows KU Resources to provide clients with in-place field density testing of soils during site grading/earthwork activities.
In July 2018, KU completed another expansion in the Duquesne office by adding an additional 5,000 square feet.
In August 2018, KU Resources, Inc. merged with Plum-based R.F. Mitall and Associates, creating the Mitall Division of KU Resources. This venture allows KU to offer Municipal Engineering and Land Surveying to our list of services.
Today and Beyond
Today, KU Resources has over 45 employees in three regional offices. The firm takes pride in its employees and work environment which led them to be named one of the Best Places to Work in PA in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. The Pittsburgh Business Times also recognized the firm as one of the Best Places to Work in Western PA for 2009 and 2010 and as one of Pittsburgh’s Fastest Growing Companies for four consecutive years.
The firm’s focus remains on providing innovative solutions and outstanding support in environmental management and site development engineering services to a wide range of clients.
